The Mafia's assassination of two crusading judges was not well-covered in the drive-by media (big surprise), but photographer Letizia Battaglia witnessed and documented those tumultuous times in Sicily first-hand. She lived to tell the tale in the documentary Shooting the Mafia. Exclusive Criminal Element review now up here.

Criminal Element: The Little Drummer Girl
Yes, it stacks the deck against the great, progressive State of Israel, just like the source novel, but when Park Chan-wook directs Michael Shannon, how can you not watch? Exclusive J.B. review now up at CRIMINAL ELEMENT here.

Criminal Element: Homecoming
All the episodes
debut tomorrow, but it is already renewed for a second season. This is how TV
works these days, if we can still use that term. Regardless, Julia Roberts
lends her still considerable star-power to the first season of Homecoming. The gist: it is remarkably
stylish visually, especially considering it based on a podcast. Exclusive J.B.
review now live on Criminal Element here.

Criminal Element: Burning
It is an auteurist
Cannes favorite chosen by South Korea as their official foreign language Oscar
submission, but it is still tense and mysterious. Lee Chang-dong’s Burning is also based on a Haruki
Murakami short story, which (hopefully) interests Criminal Element readers, as well. Executive summary: it is definitely
Lee’s best film yet, even if it is not as accessible as Poetry. Exclusive review from J.B. now live here.

Criminal Element: The Woman in White
Perhaps fittingly, J.B.’s
first piece for Criminal Element goes
back to where crime fiction started, or at least when it first reached
widespread popularity, with an exclusive review of the latest adaptation of The Woman in White. The executive precis
is: still entertainingly atmospheric, despite some departures from the text
that purists might object to (like a slimmed down Fosco). It’s now live here.
